COMPANY HISTORY
Since Reuben Heaton founded the business in 1857, his name has become synonymous with quality handmade fishing tackle, and this tradition has been carried forward to the present day, where although the product range has changed somewhat, the attitude has not.
Over the years Heaton’s have made many products from rods, reels and angling accessories to cycle parts and bullets during two world wars. In the nineteenth century the main production was reels for which Reuben Heaton gained much recognition. Reels were sold to all corners of the British Empire in vast quantities, with Heaton’s employing over eighty staff turning out around 30,000 reels a year around the turn of the century.
Reuben Heaton and his successors are responsible for many groundbreaking developments that have shaped the tackle industry over the years some of which are still in evidence today. Heaton’s patented many ideas for reels including early drag mechanisms, quick release systems for spools and large arbour reels. Reels were made for all angling disciplines and from many materials such as brass, wood, ebonite and alloy, with Heaton’s always amongst the first to try new and more advanced materials.
Heaton’s made spring balances as early as the turn of the century, but the first large dial scales did not appear until the late 1920’s. The traditional Isaak Walton logo also first appeared around this time on the dials first alloy match scales, which were adapted from the brake testing units that the company made alongside their tackle products. The design of the scales has changed very little over the years apart from the adaptation of the adjustment system, now located at the top of the scale instead of the side.
With the advent of monofilament lines and fixed spool reels Heaton’s product range began to diversify more towards scales as well as reels. Reel production finally ceased in 1984, but since that time the scales making side of the business has grown into the company we see today, and latterly new products such as the Specimen Hunter stainless steel range have emerged, taking Heaton’s back into the tackle production
once more.
